A Gaga Halloween Part 7

Unadorned mini riding hat

 Front:

Back:

Wig I made in about 2-3 hours using some black weave left over from prom 2009:

There was going to be a movie about how I made it but due to a virus my webcam and my computer were not working very well together resulting in an annoying stop and go sort of feed. Not good for a movie. My bad on that one. It looks sort of lady gagaish. It’s not blonde because there are no beauty salons around here that sell track and if there are I don’t have a car to drive forever to find it. That and I wanted something I could wear on other occasions too so it’s a happy go between.

Note: These bangs hid the fact that I totally burned myself with a curling iron in the process of curling them. Oh and I do believe it is real hair. Feels real enough to me. Could be a mix between real and synthetic…maybe.

Note #2: The hair is a mix of dark brown and black for some reason. Why I had to different coloured weaves I don’t know. All I know is that it looks cool and that I used almost every  it of them. AKA 1/8 of the dark brown 12″ weave packet [just guessing on the fraction but it wasn’t a lot. Perhaps 3 feet or so] and nearly a whole packet of 1B black 10″ weave.

All tracks bonded together with my favorite adhesive in the world:

It’s permanent adhesive and I figure it’s just as strong if not stronger than weave glue. This was the best $1.99 I have ever spent. No lie.

Onto the stockings!

A Gaga Halloween Part 6

October 22, 2009 at 3:33 am (General costuming)

Just a video this time!

I just read a flyer that said that the Residence Hall costume party is tomorrow night so I’m going to be a busy, busy bee between finish my costume and writing a mid-term.

Song: 9pm (Til I come)  by ATB

This ‘final’ product is the result of tacking, bunching and sewing ruching channels in the back. I’m not completely happy with it but it turned out better than I thought it would. It’s clear that I won’t be wearing an underskirt with this since it’s short and any underskirt I make will most likely show and make it look rather awkward. I might make a mini one for later since I’m rushing to get the base of my costume done. Good thing I don’t have to make the corset!

[Phew]

I also started on my Mad Hatter hat based on the Threadbanger tutorial I posted earlier. And I know it looks rather…scarce at the moment but I plan to use the left over velvet from my roommate’s costume [That I’m also making but she’s not going to the party so no rush there] and then appliquing the square scraps of left over fabric to it. ^.^

More tomorrow!

A Gaga Halloween Part 5

October 19, 2009 at 5:30 am (General costuming)

This is the post where I tell you how thankful I am to sewing a printed fabric. Prints when it comes to suits and tailored things are usually pains in the butt but not in thiscase. In this case they are hiding all the imperfections of my sewing technique as well as the bad quality of the photo. That and it tends to hid bodily imperfections too so…Go Prints!

So I pulled another lazy one and box pleated the skirt into the jersey waistband. And I paid for it, not dearly but close. It caused for odd ‘butt horns’ to develop and this weird pouching in the front as you’ll see in the little 20 second movie I prepared below. I couldn’t take a proper picture while wearing the skirt so I think a movie is more effective.

Song: ‘Serenity’ by Armin Van Buuren feat. Jan Vayne

To get rid of the weird bunching in the front,  the butt horns as well as shorten the skirt I think I’m going to add a four draw strings. Two in the back and two in the front. I had planned to make the 1 in seams on the gores drawstrings but at the angle they would have been rather ineffective.

More to ponder. More to sew.

A Gaga Halloween Part 4

October 18, 2009 at 8:07 pm (General costuming) (, , )

Lady Gaga’s post performance VMA outfit tutorial: Courtesy of Threadbanger. [Even though Threadbanger usually saves my life, this time not so much. But a way cool tutorial though. I enjoy seeing Rob dressed up in move lace underwear and a dress. It made my day ^.^]

I attached the skirt ruffle that I made out of rectangluar scraps to the bottom of the skirt body at last. They aren’t gathered because I think gathering takes a crapload of time, sewing one gather thread and then another to make the gathers look pretty, trying to space them out evenly and sewing them down without them getting destroyed. Instead I did the good ol’ box pleat and it looks just fine. I especially like it on the black fabric but that may just be because it’s a different weight and thickness than the almost tissue thin cobweb base fabric.

Onto the gathering at the waist!

A Gaga Halloween Part 2

October 17, 2009 at 1:04 am (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , )

Part Three of my costume construction and now it gets a wee bit interesting. I’m actually beginning to work on the different pieces that will be part of my costume as well as giving you some sort of overview of what I’m dressing in. A drawing may be posted up later.

The bows pictured above are bows that I made with the extra fabric from the shirt sleeves and tank top. I like to try and use every bit of fabric, so much so that the strings on the bows are actually bits of the tank top straps and bias lining. They aren’t the greatest bows in the world, a little awkward with unfinished edges. I was feeling lazy so they’re made out of permanent fabric adhesive and left over fabric. But they will serve their purpose. Besides why go through the struggle of setting up a sewing machine and spending hours finishing off edges, binding them and perfecting the bows?

The green bow is a hair accessory. Lime green wired ribbon that I glued strings of pearls and individual pearls as well as ribbon onto. I think it looks rather fabulous. Better picture later.

And yes that is my mini ironing board which I covered with my Otakon 13 tee shirt. The original cover had a horrible water stain.

Above is the cut up pieces of two male tee shirts ready to be manipulated into the underskirt. I cut these tee shirts up because they were nice and soft and cozy but almost pretty grimey with stains even after being washed. No one will see them and the main purpose for the skirt is to warm up my legs later and puff up the skirt.

Now the stockings are what inspired this outfit to begin with and the amount of stockings I’m using for this project is rather ridiculous but I’m sure I’ll have at least one decent pair left over. The main stockings I’m using are stockings that have holes and runs in them because I don’t groom my nails as well as I should. But I noticed that when I layer stockings and pantyhose for warmth they had a distinct pattern, forming a nice shadow effect. That and control tops look like the bottoms of Lady Gaga’s leotards when worn.

To continue with the ‘evil murdered dolly’ look I severed off one leg from two pairs of pantyhose and two legs from one pair of pantyhose. The reason? So no one will see my undies if I’m walking around before the Halloween party even though I did buy lime/black hot pants for the occasion. That and warmth. Halloween is usually a brisk day if not flat out freezing. The other legs will be like thigh highs but I plan on decorating the tops so they don’t slide down. I may put a garter strip connecting control top to thigh high since I was inspired by Option #2 which are stockings with built in garter belt. I didn’t notice until after I opened the package. So if all does not go well with Option #1, these are my alternative.

The extras are for the gloves that will more or less have the distressed shadow effect but with pearls along the knuckles…maybe. Also I’ll be attempting a wig so one stocking foot will become a wig cap.

Threadbanger saves my life on so many occassions when it comes to inspiration. [Though I did have the Lady GaGa idea before they posted the video of Top Ten Costumes.] I love the Mad Hatter tutorial and figure that a minaturized Mad Hatter Hat would be the cherry to a wonderful Gaga sundae. Now all I need is a hot glue gun.

A Gaga Halloween Part 1

October 17, 2009 at 12:22 am (General costuming)

So this is Part One of my Halloween Costume construction. It is picture heavy so I apologize to all those using dial up. I also apologize for the poor quality photos. I don’t have a digital camera but I do have a webcam so that’s what I use. At least it’s better than nothing.

The shirt that I am coverting into a skirt was $1.25 at my local JCPenny [ultra clearance rack] and a size 3XXX, which I didn’t realize until after I brought it back to my dorm. I seam ripped it, mostly,  into the above pieces and further broke them down to the pieces below. I decided to add a ruffle at the bottom below the awesomely placed draw string so I cut up the tank top into rectangles and shortened the skirt body so that it was mini-er [14 inches]. I have yet to figure out how to use the shirred collar.

The waistband is made out of a strip of jersey or tee shirt fabric.I cut up the sleeves and forgot to make the side inserts triangular in this step which turned out to bite me in the butt later on.

Below is a digital swatch of what the pattern of the fabric is since it looks a lot like broad marbled pinstripe from the above photos. It’s got a really interesting almost dripping cobweb look to it that I like.

Below is the gore after the disaster. I forgot that rectangles don’t fit into slits as well as triangles do and in order to compensate I tried to stitch down the overlap. Needless to say it turned out a royal mess and I had to seam rip out the stitches and start over, tracing and pinning. The gore has a 1 inch seam allowance because I want there to be drawstrings there as well. The skirt will already be uneven due to the sloping sides but what’s another inch or so? I added the gores in order to create a more effective gather. Even though Lady Gaga is known for her skin tight clothes I also wanted to incorporate my love for Gothic Lolita. So the skirt will plume with a subtle cone shape which is typical in EGL sillohouttes. I left my netting at home so I plan on just making a tiered under skirt. Besides netting wouldn’t be as warm as, say, jersey.

Why Go Gaga for Halloween?

October 16, 2009 at 7:21 am (General costuming) (, , , , , )

A/N: This will be the prelude of what is to come. AKA my dress diary for my Lady Gaga costume.

I have always been against dressing up as a celebrity for Halloween. Instead I’ve been pro-creativity even though creativity ends up with guys walking around in penis costumes or bloody pads with bloody tampon nun-chucks at its worst. [Wtfcostumes.com will show you the best and the worst of homemade creative Halloween costumes] But this year I find myself finding myself being a hypocrite.

It has been decided.

I am going to be a Lady Gaga doll with ethnicity issues.

Why Lady Gaga? Why not be Lady Gaga? Since she, originally a brunette, stepped onto the scene she has been shocking the world with her fashion sense that is both futuristic but twistedly retro. Some people love it and adore it while others would rather spend the night literally vomitting up their own intestines then see her walk around in stockings and leotards…AGAIN. I personally find favor in it and the range gives the person impersonating her this Halloween incredible room to move around. If you don’t know what I mean Google Image ‘Lady Gaga’ or better yet ‘Lady Gaga Fashion’ and though there are repeats the more pages you visit the more you discover.

Just to feature a pair. Lady Gaga is the new Barbie in the variety of outfits she wears. So why not try your hand at being her?

I mean when else can you walk in public without pants?

What the Wii?!

October 15, 2009 at 8:07 pm (Gaming) (, , , , , )

Project Runway is turning into a Wii game?

I clearly disapprove and have defined Nintendo’s move to include this game into the Wii’s already weak gaming arsenal as another nail in the coffin. This definitely a ploy to attract the female audience to start gaming though I do not see how a game about fashion will eventually become something worthy of attracting girls into gaming regularly and going into other notable titles that are definitely worth their time. Titles such as Bioshock, Infamous, the all important Halo series and Gears of War; all three games satisfying masculinity. But there is nothing like, speaking from experience, scaring the crap out of your feminine self with a Big Daddy or roaring out a string of profanity as your armoured body lies dead in the middle of an Arbitor invasion.

Either way the news of this release makes me further dislike the Wii, the experimental console that it is, and pout disapprovingly at one of my favorite shows: Project Runway. How they are going to be able to pull this game off without it looking like the 9os version of Barbie fashion on CD-ROM is beyond me. This is ignoring the fact that girls everywhere will be learning how to strut using the Wii Balance Board Controller. I’m still interested to see what kind of rating this gets and if it is straight to the children’s section despite the show being oriented towards older youth.

Shame on you Heidi Klum.

Tim Gunn you should know better not to dress up a flop with a monetary excuse. The judges just won’t hear it.

And Nintendo…Really?

Hello world!

October 15, 2009 at 5:07 am (Uncategorized)

Welcome to WordPress.com. This is your first post. Edit or delete it and start blogging!

Well then! Let’s get to it shall we?

To start things off I have to say that this has to be one of my many brilliant late night ideas that were born out of staring at my laptop screen waiting for something to pop up in order to entertain me for the next few hours until my eyes get heavy and I can start going off into dreams about the 4 Biological Molecules of Life.

To be frank, and since the first step is admittance, I would like to say that I am indeed addicted to this thing called the internet and my sleek laptop that allows me to access it. I’ve journaled online since I was a freshman in high school, very late in the ‘blogging’ world for my generation, having written on the long since outdated sites of Xanga, LiveJournal, and Myspace. I was a late comer to those trends too and I got bored with them, having realized that I missed the trend train a long time ago.

Perhaps when I start these things I always have the stigma that a blog is about one thing and one thing only. Either it is about one’s life, one’s technical interests, or a hobby/pasttime. I intend to blur those lines.

That is your only warning.

I may post some writings. I may share a funny picture. I may rant about something that infuriates me. I may even have a few postings of a dress diary since my interests span from writing to sewing to Biology which covers a broad map of things.

That is all.
