New Weave

March 29, 2010 at 2:49 am (Hair, Updates) (, , , )

My pertty [mhm, mispelling intended] new hair that was graciously put in by Esteban Brown for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Better pictures to come, I promise. It’s just that I wanted to put it up while I was thinking about it. That and it’s almost 11 at night and the lights in my room are ridiculous when it comes to photographing things. Oh that and my webcam has been through some things.

It’s a little over shoulder length, the hair itself is a mix between 12″ human hair in black and 18″ human hair in dark brown, with an averge left part, layered mainly on the right side. It’s glued in with white glue.

I’m having one of those weeks…

March 26, 2010 at 5:42 pm (Uncategorized)

No matter the excitement for Ma Rainey I just can’t get over this week and why it’s taking so long. Nothing is going right and my feet hurt from these gorgeous blue suede heels. My 20s dress makes me want to personally gag, my extensions are ridiculous because I left my comb in costume shop, I pretty much bailed involuntarily on a public speaking project and to put the cherry ontop of the cake: I’ve lost my ID card. The card that has my life at this university on it. Without it I can’t get my meals or get into my building. It’s nowhere in sight and I’m hungry as I don’t know what.

Ugh, and to think I have to perform tonight. This week keeps getting better.

A Late Night Blurb

March 25, 2010 at 5:01 am (Updates) (, , , , , , , , )

I haven’t blogged in awhile so I figure I’ll just make an intsy wintsy post about stuff that’s going on.

Well currently I’m waiting for the two tablets of Tylenol to kick in. I’ve had a headache since this evening and I have stress, B.O., lack of food for that. I’ve been working nonstop in the costume shop for the Alice in Wonderland ballet for ORB. All costumes have to be ready by Sunday so not only is Julie freaking out, so am I.

Ma Rainey is this weekend and I’m excited about it. If you don’t know about Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom by August Wilson…well shame on you. It’s a classic tale of negroes and blues, tailored and embellished with enriching monologues, late 1920s jazz, death, and complicated bisexual relationships. It’s interesting and I’m glad to be a part of it. So consider this a large shout out to Connor who has been a terrific director and organizer. Without him I don’t think this performance would be much of anything.

To go along with Ma Rainey I’ve decided that I would make my own dress for the performance. I don’t have anything that would fit in with the atmosphere so I’ve whipped up a dress in about two days. I would be working on it tonight but I just got out of rehearsal, the back of my eyes hurt, I don’t have the patience, I’m tired and I just want to spend some quality time with my laptop and the boy before I get some shut eye.

Esteban is supposed to be doing my hair tomorrow so to go long with my headache, my forehead is aching from where I took out my weave. A little conditioner does wonders on hair glue. The irritating part of it though is that now that the track is off there are little impressions of hair glue in my actual hair. I’ve combed, tirelessly, it all out only to come to the realization that once Ma Rainey is over, they’ll be right back where I put them plus more tracks.

The work never ends.

Barettes galore

March 22, 2010 at 1:51 am (Hair, Updates) (, , , , , , , )

Well only two barettes but I’ve noticed that they’ve become my latest late night obsession. Mainly because their small, easy, quick and fun to work on unlike any of my other projects that have either been postponed, paused, halted, or given up on all together. That, and I enjoy working with fuzzy yarn and shower curtain plastic…it sorta inspires me in weird ways.

But without any further rambling I now present to you a nearly completed work and works in progress:

Yet another barette that needs a backing. I’m thinking I’m going to have to go to walmart and get a buttload of barette backings. I decided at the last moment that I wanted a bow or a flower…since I realized at the last moment that I can’t stick my needle through the thick cardboard. So a flower, which then turned into a felt bow became the answer. It’s much cuter in reality/sunlight. I hoped the colours would be more marble and mixed but ah well, I like it.

These were going to be bandaids but I like their mod-ness. It’s made out of white felt and clear shower curtain that was left over from RENT’s Angel’s costume with white round handstitching. They aren’t as big as the previous barette but they are 3/4’s of the size so they’re wonderfully chunky. Still not done though. I’ll think of something more to stick on them or stitch into them.

I decided I would make a kandi cuff this weekend out of red, yellow, orange, and yellow pony beads. It was a demonstration on how pony bead bracelets are soo much more than kid crafts. If we’re talking kid kids not kandi kids. Oh and that is not an upside down heart on the inside of my forearm, it’s a fat Star Trek communicator. I also did henna this weekend during a church retreat so it would have been kind of inappropriate to put it where it was supposed to go.

More later!

Hair Progress

March 19, 2010 at 4:56 pm (Hair, Updates)

Well just a little. But doing my bangs is better than nothing right? I used some hair glue and glued in two tracks to make them look more full.

[P.S. It was a real bitch to trim them for the first time since last semester.]

On another note I tried to make dreads yesterday using my curling iron. At first it worked all right, I could look past the section lines that were pressed into it. I did two backcombed and two silky and even tried my hand dreading yarn like gothdolly [youtube.] But that same day I noticed that they were beginning to unravel aka not enough heat. Here are the results one day later:

They look dreadful [no pun intended] The crimp lines are unmistakable and they’re the bad sort of fluffy. The yarn is loose no matter how tight it looks ontop. So curling iron is out and I’ll have to wait until I get some cash to buy a relatively inexpensive straightener. Either that or [cringe] try to boil them with my coffeepot.

Onto note #3 I’ve started another barette project made out of yarn, felt, and a cardboard base:

I love this yarn to death. It’s really soft and cozy, so much so I wish I had a blanket made out of it or at least a stuffed animal. I tried to crochet it but I dont’ have the expertise to find the loops and get past simply chainging it like I’ve done in the picture. But besides the two barettes in progress I made another yarn creation about two days ago out of yellow baby yarn and some vintage scrap fabric that I should have hemmed before I pleated. No worries though, it still looks cute.

Late night craftiness

March 19, 2010 at 3:16 am (Uncategorized) (, , , , , )

So I have nothing better to do than look yarn and say ‘hmmm what to do?’.

I know I know, I could have used my free thursday productively and worked on my corset but I’ll be damned if I didn’t set it as a summer project. Anyways I’ve been perusing the Internet practically all day for inspiration with my hair and I came up with these:

[pulling hair from the sides, pinning in the back and thus tucking it up and over the pins in a little waterfall in the back of my head.]

[They’re yarn dreads that look absolutely cozy and soft.]

And the second picture led to this:

A heart made out of my fuzzy white yarn and some thick black cardboard. It will most likely become a barette once I get the back piece.

Creativity Out the Wazoo aka My Head

March 17, 2010 at 3:59 am (Hair, Updates) (, , , , , , , , , , )

Corset update: Postponed for now. I’ll continue when I find the time and the fabric stiffener I so desire. The reason? I think the corset would benefit from stiffened yarn, especially now that I realize that the blue yarn is rather tangled and old and coming out of it’s twist. That and the corset will be firmer and tuck in all my extra ‘bum rolls’ and ‘tiger stripes’.

Disco Bra update: I put in the elastic so that it reaches around me a lot better. I’m actually thinking of cutting away the side strapes and using really wide elastic I got from the shop and making it a snap on. But other than that I covered the cups of the blue bra with the shiny green fabric. I’m going to sew along the edges extra tight to secure it on. I did the blue bra first because it doesn’t need a lot of work to be done on it like the black and pink, which needed a piece of foam to extend the cup upwards.

Hairbow update: Pictures coming soon as well as it’s completion.

[With a pending cash flow these projects will be completed, especially since the boyfriend and best friend are going away for a retreat this weekend and I’ll be able to get my butt to walmart without a problem. Oh the benefits of being left alone on campus for a weekend.]

Now for the featured presentation:

I’ve been dying to do something with my hair. Something crazy and relatively amazing. The most extreme I’ve gotten was putting in temporary hair falls in for Otakon 2008. I cut my bangs last semester, which reminds me that I need to trim them, and I’ve been perming it straight ever 3 to 6 weeks since I was 16. So I’m returning to my crazy roots and going with a mix of alternative hair styles. Aka my head will be full of loose hair extentions, synthetic dreads, beads, and possibly even some yarn falls. I started planning this a week or so ago over spring break when I showed a picture of Motoko, or ‘Major’, from the anime ‘Ghost in the Shell’ to my boyfriend. I told him I always wanted her hair and he asked ‘why not?’.  So instead of sitting here and trying to explain through words I’m just going to let you see my inspirations.

And all the lovely pictures at

P.S. Don’t get mad but I took apart my wig…O.O
